Jack Phillips teaches a natural systems approach to tree care and consults for planting and preservation projects throughout North America. His career has taken him to the Tongass rainforest and the Sahara Desert, and many places in between. He is Principal and founder of New Tree School and teaches on the Faculty of Arboriculture Canada Training and Education.

After a career as a college humanities professor, Jack became a Registered Consulting Arborist and devoted himself to teaching sustainable tree planting and care. He studied with Dr. Kevin T. Smith of the US Forest Service research station in Durham, New Hampshire and was also a student and woodland companion of the late Dr. Alex Shigo, considered by many to be the father of modern arboriculture, with whom he published The Soul of a Tree and The Nature of Tree Care. Jack’s essays have appeared in such diverse publications as America, Eastern Churches Journal, and Tree Care Industry Magazine.

He lives in the eastern Nebraska woods with his wife and sons.
